In your survey results I’d like to go over what hypothyroidism and my top 3 tips to help you build curves and burn fat while improving your overall health.
HYPOTHYROID SYMPTOMS: WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE LOW THYROID
Many adults (1 in 10) are affected by a thyroid condition. You may have an underactive thyroid and not be aware! Here is what you need to know about hypothyroidism!
A DEFINITION
Hypothyroidism is when your thyroid gland is under active and not producing enough thyroid hormones. There are many causes of an under active thyroid including pregnancy, lack of exercise, genetics and a poor diet!
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU ARE HYPOTHYROID?
Check my hypothyroid symptoms below and see how many of ’em apply to you! If more than three seem familiar, it’s time to see a doctor! Only a physician can diagnose an under active thyroid (don’t leave it up to google, get it properly checked!).
A simple blood test at your doctor’s will reveal the state of your thyroid hormones. You can also seek the help of a naturopath who use slightly different markers to test your thyroid gland.
Most doctors will check for levels of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). You can also ask for your physician to check for free T3 and free T4 which are the precursors to our two thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). It’s important to note that there is much controversy surrounding what normal levels of thyroid hormones should be. If you have symptoms of hypothyroid and your tests came back normal, you can opt to get it rechecked with another physician or naturopath or wait about 6 weeks and re-take the test. It’s important to get a proper diagnosis as your path to healing very much depends on proper medication.
Hypothyroid Symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Puffy Face
- Feeling unusually cold
- Catching “colds” all the time
- Moodiness
- Depression and anxiety
- Weight gain and sluggish metabolism
- Hair loss and thinning hair
- Cracked skin
- Changes in menstrual cycle
- Infertility
- Muscle aches and fatigue
- Joint swelling and stiffness
WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH AN UNDER ACTIVE THYROID
Don’t freak out and be sure to follow your doctor’s advice! They may prescribe some medication depending on the severity of your symptoms and condition. If prescribed medication, make sure to take it as prescribed on an empty stomach. Be aware many foods including grains and coffee interfere with our bodies’ ability to absorb thyroid medication.
1. Diet
Now that we have a better understanding of what hypothyroidism is it’s time to make some adjustments to your diet and exercise habits. I would suggest picking up a good meal plan built for with an underactive thyroid (like my hypothyroid meal plan here!).
2. Start Moving!
The best way to combat a sluggish metabolism is to start being more active! If you aren’t currently consistently working out, start by adding three days of weight training. You can join a gym and follow along with the full workout workout program that comes with my hypothyroid plan, sign up for some classes or opt to hire a fitness professional.
Remember inactivity is one the precursors to low thyroid level, so get up and get active!
As far as diet is concerned, be aware that some foods are detrimental for those for an underactive thyroid. Check out my post regarding hypothyroid foods here! Make sure to remove or reduce the foods that interfere with thyroid production.
3. Supplements
Last but not least, there are some supplements and adaptogens like ashwagandha that can help stimulate and balance thyroid hormones. I’ve make a list of 6 supplements that can benefit those with low thyroid here. Make sure to check em out!
